Good News and Positive Vibrations

We kick off 2021 with congratulations to two of our clients, Amina Montesir and Brent McMorris. We met both of them through the kind recommendation of Katie O’Grady at The Studio NW and Acting for Kids and Teens and they’ve since signed with the Zuri Agency. Congratulations Amina and Brent!

Portland Headshots - Brent McMorris

Speaking of Katie O’Grady, we plead “mea culpa” for being so slow to share this wonderful piece she directed. It was created this past fall as an inspiration to get out and vote. It remains a powerful message today so we’re happy to pass it along with shoutouts to the young actors who participated, many of whom have worked with us over the years.

We’re super excited to shoutout some congratulations to Ryan Artists talent Darius Fox for his recent appearance in this commercial for Osmo Learning.

Over the holidays, we had the chance to connect again with actor Devin White. He took the headshots we did for him and made his way down to LA where he’s worked on more than a half dozen films over the past few years. Check out his website and reel here.

We’re just making a picture of Zuri talent Tracey Hugo a permanent part of our website. Every month she seems to book a new gig. Most recently, she filmed educational videos for Star Autism (on location at The Studio NW, by the way). She also celebrated a birthday this month so Happy Birthday, Tracey!

We’re proud to say “congratulations” to Jessie Barr and everyone involved in the film, Sophie Jones, which was recently picked up for distribution by Oscilloscope Films. We don’t mind sending an extra bit of congratulations to Skyler Verity, who’s headshots we’ve been shooting for a good long time.

Last but not least, we wish happy January birthdays to three of our favorite people: actor Mya Van Koten (SLU Agency); our good friend and businesswoman, Sonia Bhagwan; and our ace hair and makeup stylist and all-around bestie, Karina Talaro (who’s also represented by SLU). Happy Birthday!

What's Next in 2021?

A few days ago we celebrated 13 years of creating beautiful and authentic pictures of Portland’s creative community. Thank YOU!

Here’s a sneak peek into what we have planned for 2021.

Headshots

It’s what we do most and what we like best: helping actors, models and creatives be successful. We’re practicing some snazzy new lighting techniques we’ll be launching this spring.

Portfolios

The months long process of remodeling our studio is (almost) complete and with it comes new lighting and new set pieces for winter portfolios.

Fashion Editorial

When we started doing kid’s fashion editorials three years ago, we had no idea the enthusiasm we’d meet from our clients and the publishing world. Our streak of 18 straight published editorials continued this past fall and there’s no stopping us in 2021. Our goal is to travel a little more around the beautiful Pacific Northwest, maybe to Seattle or even B.C.

The Rockstar Sessions

“Rockstar” is another idea that’s taken off since it was launched three years ago and the sky’s the limit. Or at the very least we’ll emulate everything Annie Leibovitz has done since the late 70s.

The Retro Sessions

A brand new event we’ll be launching in January, inspired by the classic imagery of the 60s and 70s music, entertainment and fashion industries. First up: a black and white tribute to Richard Avedon.

Here’s to ’21!

My Favorite Photo Book Finds of 2020

The challenges of 2020 haven’t undermined my semi-addictive love for collecting art and photography books. Though I miss the in-store-hanging-out-with-my-wife-and-a-cup-of-coffee experience, I’ve added to my collection quite handily by supporting independent bookstores around the country. Here are a few of my favorite purchases of 2020.

9780375505072-us.jpg

Annie Leibovitz - American Music

Considering the influence rock and roll photography has on my images, it’s surprising this one is just now landing in my collection. From front to back, it’s pure inspiration. My favorites are the spontaneous jam session shot of Charlie Sexton and Doyle Bramhall II (which inspired our last Rockstar Session) and the deliciously devilish Tom Waits attacking the Hammond organ. A must have that I now have.

Peter Lindbergh - On Fashion Photography

When I was in New York 18 months ago, I saw a whole array of Peter Lindbergh books at the 5th Avenue Barnes & Noble. If it weren’t for the travails of transportation — how many extra suitcases can I manage? — I would’ve bought them all.

Then he passed away last fall and, as you’d imagine, his books became hard to find and very expensive. Recently the people at Better World Books have come to the rescue and now three of his volumes are now in my collection.

This is my favorite, a gigantic compendium including many of his most famous photos, shot for virtually every major fashion house on the planet. Beyond the obvious beauty of the super models — Kate Moss for Marc Jacobs is exquisite — there are less obvious treats like the candid of John Malkovich applying mascara during a shoot for Miuccia Prada.

517jGPU68JL._SX393_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

Richard Avedon - Photographs 1946-2004

This book was published in August 2007 by the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art for a retrospective that opened that same month. It’s not a book that’s new to me; it’s been on my library card many times over the last decade.

Now it’s on my coffee table, thanks to Godfather’s Books in Astoria, OR, where I found a freshly sealed copy for just $70. There was a sublime dynamism to Avedon’s work that will, no doubt find it’s way into my pictures somehow. My favorites are the standing-still portrait of David Bowie and the flying-through-the-air fashion photo of Verushka.

Serge Normant - Metamorphosis

Serge Normant is not a photographer. He’s a hairstylist who’s worked with every major photographer, fashion brand and magazine on the planet. What’s cool about this book is the diversity of styles and range of photographers who are included. My favorites are the stunningly simple portrait of a young Reese Witherspoon by Herb Ritts, the cover image of Julia Roberts and an off-the-charts photo of Gisele Bundchen created by Patrick DeMarchelier.

516PC3D2WHL._SX359_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

GRUAU-A_2048x.jpg

Gruau - Portraits of Men

Before photographers dominated magazines, illustrators were the rockstars of the fashion world. Rene Gruau (who was born Count Renato Zavagli Ricciardelli della Caminate) was one such illustrator. Born in 1909, he was a published professional by the time he was 18 years old and worked well into his 80s.

This book, published by Assouline, compiles some of his most dynamic work, from 1950s covers of long-retired men’s culture magazines to advertising images he created for the likes of Dior and Bemberg in the 1970s and 80s.

I’m not here to slag on the Amazon and Barnes & Noble. I buy from them on a regular basis. But let’s not forget the heartbeat of the American book trade: the independent bookstore. They need our support more than ever. Please buy from these stores. Click on the name to get to their website.

Refresh Your Face for a Better Headshot

So you’ve picked your photographer and you’ve scheduled your headshot. In the week or two ahead, you’ll pick out your wardrobe, map out the route to the shooting location, drink lots of water and get lots of sleep. Is there anything else you need to do? Yes! Prepare your skin!

“The best way to prep your skin for a shoot is to get help from a professional,” says internationally published hair and makeup artist, Karina Talaro. “If you can, make an appointment to get a moisturizing facial a week before your shoot.” If you can’t schedule an appointment — or prefer to do it yourself — then do these two important things:

1. Exfoliate.

“I recommend you exfoliate 2 or 3 times during week before your photoshoot,” says Karina. “Exfoliation exposes fresh, healthy skin by removing dead skin cells from the top layer of your skin.”

Ginzing

One of Karina’s favorite exfoliating cleansers is Origins GINZING Refreshing Scrub Cleanser, a 100% vegetarian formula made with Panax Ginseng and “caffeine from coffee beans.”

If the $23 price tag for a 5 oz. tube of GINZING is outside your budget, Karina suggests Neutrogena’s Pore Refining Exfoliating Cleanser, which you can find at most drug stores for around $8 or $9 for a 7-ounce tube.

2. Moisturize

Clinque

“The next most important step is to moisturize daily,” adds Karina. “Moisturizing boosts hydration and it will ensure your skin glows on camera. If you aren’t already using a daily moisturizer, grab a hypoallergenic moisturizer with no fragrances to insure you don’t have an allergic reaction.”

Clinique’s Moisture-Surge formula, which can be found at retailers like Ulta, is one of Karina’s favorites because it “gives your skin instant rehydration and leaves it plump and dewy.” For the more economically-minded, she recommends Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost Water Gel.

Once you try these two easy steps, Karina recommends making them part of your daily or weekly regimen. “Exfoliating and moisturizing for a week will certainly freshen your face for a better headshot but, as with everything worthwhile, a long term commitment will always make for better results.”

Common sense reminder: if you have allergies or other skin conditions that require a doctor’s care, check with them before trying any of these suggestions!

Good News & Positive Vibrations

_DSC5314-Edit - Jordyn Brown - (c) 2020 Michael Verity Photography. All Rights Reserved.jpg

In spite of the travails of 2020, many of our clients have been booking, shooting and releasing new projects over the past few months. Applause and congratulations to those who’ve successfully prevailed through the pandemic:

Our long time friend and headshot client Jordyn Brown (left, Q6 Talent) will be acting the role of Devyn in Spirit Works Productions’ debut film, We Nation, which starts shooting in October.

Talented young actor Jonah Vollmar (Ryan Artists) got a recent reprieve from quarantine by booking a role on a forthcoming TV pilot. Though we’ve never worked with his super talented older sister, Nyah, we want to send props on the release of her new single, which you can hear here:

_DSC6329-Edit - Chloe BRown - (c) 2020 Michael Verity Photography. All Rights Reserved.jpg

Along with shooting a gorgeous new portfolio with us last month, Chloe Brown (right, SLU) did some work for the folks at Under Armour. She and her family were also on set this past week shooting a commercial for PeaceHealth.

Big props go out to Zuri actor Austin Huynh who booked a PSA with American Bankers Association and we have big hugs for Piper Evenhus, who joined the Zuri roster as a youth actor.

The mega-talented Yeshara Ruth (Puddletown) shared the trailer for her new film, The Deliverance of Amy Stronghold. You can take a peek here:

Over in the world of commercials, we were excited to learn that Darius Fox and Graham O’Brien, both of whom have done portfolios with us, booked commercials over the past few months via their agent, Ryan Artists.

In the world of print, we’re applauding Olivia Heinrich (Puddletown) for her recent advertising work with Jetson Scooters. One of our gorgeous Fun & Fashion images of her was also featured in a recent edition of Labelle Kids and Teens magazine.

Zuri talent Tracey Hugo (right) is on set this week doing a photoshoot for Shutterfly. She and her son, Alex, are also part of a national marketing campaign for Connections Academy.

We heard word that actor and model Austin Leo scored a booking with Axesea Australian Surf Company while his brother Cody filmed a Chevrolet commercial over the summer.

_DSC8802-Edit - Lilian McNeil - (c) 2020 Michael Verity Photography. All Rights Reserved.jpg

Super talented actor and longtime bestie, Lilian McNeil (Zuri) has two indie film projects in the works. The dramatic thriller, Roseblood, which was filmed in Seattle this past January, is currently being submitted to film festivals around the world. The Lanky Lurker, which finished shooting this month, is in post-production. This past May, Oscillosope released Lara Gallagher’s Tribeca Award nominee, Clementine, in which Lilian played a supporting role.

Congratulations to all our clients who’ve been working hard and enjoying successes during these crazy, upside down times.

Shooting Stars: Sabina's Style

_DSC6645-Edit-2 - Sabina - (c) 2020 Michael Verity Photography. All Rights Reserved.jpg

Models: Olga Shcherbakova (and Cleo)

Inspiration: This session happened because of a random act of kindness. We were working on an editorial session in The Pearl and happened to park outside a boutique called Sabina’s Style. Olga stepped out of the shop, introduced herself and offered to let us use their changing room. The next thing you know, we’re talking about doing a session.

Creative Brief: The creative brief for this session was pretty simple: capture beautiful images of Olga wearing clothing from the boutique.

How many shoots we’ve done together: Just 1, though we’re hoping for many more.

Time of year: Summer

Location: The Pearl

Purpose of the shoot: Advertising images for Sabina’s Style.

Shoot music: Does me singing “Remedy” by Jason Mraz at the top of my lungs count?

Most unexpected turn: We adopted a 6-week old puppy a few days before the shoot and decided she was better suited on site than alone in her kennel. Next thing you know, she’s a runway model.

My favorite part of the day: Advertising photography is something I love so anytime I can work with a designer or a boutique, I’m pretty happy.

Camera: Sony A7rIII

Lens: Sigma 105mm f1.4

Propers: The clothes were styled by my bestie, Claire Verity, along with input from Olga and the shop’s owner, Sabina Kupillas. And, of course, paws up for Miss Cleo.

3 Great Portfolio Places in Portland

A great photographer, who understands light and color, can make great portfolio pictures just about anywhere. Alleyways, open windows, arcades, even the parking lot of the local Starbucks. (I know this because I once shot a portfolio in the parking lot of the local Starbucks. The pictures were great. So was the coffee.)

Some places are better than others, of course, and in Portland there are a few neighborhoods that have become my favorites. Here are 3 Great Portfolio Places in Portland:

The Pearl

The Pearl

The Pearl is one of my favorites because of its diversity. The north end has a slicker more contemporary vibe while the south side is a bit edgier. There’s a good variety of color and you can generally find great light even at high noon. There are some nice parks for shooting kids (like Tanner Springs) and plenty of low traffic areas where you can take your time and get great images. Extra credit: if you’re a dog lover, The Fields is unequaled for spotting beautiful breeds of all kinds.

SE Division

Another of my favorite places to shoot portfolios is on SE Division, in the neighborhood of Pine State Biscuits. There are easily accessible, beautifully lit alleyways with a diversity of color. If you walk a few blocks east, you find a nice neighborhood vibe that works well for photographing kids. It’s also a good place to headshots. Extra credit: did I mention Pine State Biscuits?

Downtown Vancouver

It’s not technically Portland but it’s not Siberia, either. It’s just over the river and you don’t need a passport to get there.

The newly rebuilt waterfront has a ton on nicely lit spots that work super well for portfolios. There are several green spaces, good for athletic shots, and a beautiful promenade along the river that shoots well on the occasional day when it’s not sunny in the Northwest.

And there are a dozen great restaurants in the neighborhood for your post-portfolio provisions. Hint: some of the best Mexican street tacos in the area can be found at Little Conejo at the corner of 6th and Washington.

What’s your favorite spot in Portland to shoot a portfolio? We’ll join you there and make some amazing pictures. And then we’ll have lunch.

The Focus Files: Edited v. Retouched

Know What You’re Paying For

Two words you’ll see when shopping for a photographer are edited and retouched. To most consumers, they seem like the same thing but they’re actually very different. Here’s some information about editing versus retouching and why it’s important to know the difference.

What Is Editing?

In the strictest sense, editing is selecting the best images from a session. When I narrow 300 frames down to 30 great shots, I’ve edited your session.

Many photographers — including me — expand edited to include basic adjustments like exposure, color correction, contrast and/or cropping. On the left is a raw image that came straight from my camera; on the right is an edited image that includes some basic adjustments. The edited image is nice but it doesn’t really stand out.

RAW IMAGE, STRAIGHT FROM THE CAMERA

RAW IMAGE, STRAIGHT FROM THE CAMERA

EDITED IMAGE

EDITED IMAGE

What is retouching?

Retouching is taking an edited image and polishing it for prime time. It’s the secret sauce that makes each photographer unique. In my workflow, I clean up wild hairs and blemishes, soften harsh shadows, tweak color and contrast, then finish with a magic potion of Photoshop work that makes your image pop.

On the left is the edited image from above and, on the right, is a sparkling retouched image that pops right off the screen.

EDITED IMAGE FROM ABOVE

EDITED IMAGE FROM ABOVE

FINISHED IMAGE, READY TO SEND TO OUT FOR AUDITIONS!

FINISHED IMAGE, READY TO SEND TO OUT FOR AUDITIONS!

Why It’s Important To Know The Difference

Let’s say Sammy Photographer advertises 10 edited images for $200 and Jimmy Photographer advertises 4 retouched images for $300. On the surface, it seems like Sammy is offering the better deal.

But remember: Sammy is giving you edited images.

If you want to put your best foot forward with images that are polished and professional rather than just edited and OK, you want your pictures to be retouched. Sammy will probably make that happen but he’ll charge you accordingly, sometimes as much as $100 per retouched photo. Suddenly you’re paying a whole lot more than you expected!

Know What You’re Paying For

When shopping for a photographer, always ask this question: Am I getting a ton of edited images that’ll never leave my hard drive or am I getting the retouched images I need to achieve my goals and succeed in my business? Ask that question, know what you’re paying for and you’ll get better images and have a much more fulfilling photographic experience.

Shooting Stars: Spirit

editorial black and white best photographer in Portland

Model: Mallorie Mendoza

Inspiration: This editorial session was inspired by Mallorie, who is one of the most dynamic people I’ve ever met, and a book about designers and creative directors by Nathan Williams called The Eye.

Creative Brief: The creative brief for this editorial was pretty simple: make 3 or 4 black and white images that capture the essence of her personality: powerful, persistent and supremely driven.

How many shoots we’ve done together: Mallorie has been a client for the better part of 10 years. I’ve lost count of how many pictures I’ve taken of her.

Time of year: Winter

Location: Our studio

Purpose of the shoot: For Mallorie’s Mom (and a book we plan to publish in 2021).

Shoot music: We didn’t have any music. We talked a little about what we wanted to shoot and chatted with Mallorie about her first semester at school in New York. Otherwise, it was pretty quiet, almost meditative. It was quite beautiful, actually.

Most unexpected turn: Candidly, we were planning to do 5 outfits but one of them, a big fuzzy jacket on top and a long jacket tied around her waist, didn’t work out so well. The black pants and gray Converse looked pretty cool, though.

Mallorie’s favorite part of the day: “Playing with different sources of light was so cool! Like the one where I was looking out the window. I also loved the vibe of this shoot because it was dancer in fashion wear, which was really fun to do! It felt like what I would want to wear around the streets of New York (if someone could style me all the time. Hah.)”

My favorite part of the day: We shot 5 outfits in 2 hours, including hair and makeup. It was so smooth and collaborative and relaxed and tuned-in, it seemed like it lasted about 5 minutes. It was a brilliant collaboration.

Camera: Sony A7rIII

Lens: Sigma 105mm f1.4

Favorite shoot hack: My approach was purposely very basic. I didn’t want the shoot to be about lights; I wanted it to be about Mallorie. So I used a medium sized Octobox camera right for a few looks, a beauty dish overheard with some fill for another and light from a window for the last one. She stood on a stool for the last one, if you want to call that a hack.

Propers: The clothes were styled by my bestie, Claire Verity. Hair and makeup was done by the incomparable Karina Talaro. And, of course, none of it happens without Mallorie’s superstar Mom, Janett.

MOVING FORWARD, SHOOTING RESPONSIBLY

Following our fellow business leaders, we at Michael Verity Photography want to share how we’re responding to the current public health situation.

First and foremost: please take good care of yourself and your family. We encourage you to follow the advice of the World Health Organization and “Do The Five.”

How We’re Insuring Your Health and Safety

In addition to “Doing The Five” ourselves, we’re doing the following at our studio to insure everyone’s health and safety:

1. All shoots are being done outside. We have 11 awesome acres at our studio — and 100 acres of land next door - and we’re taking advantage of every one of them!

2. We're approaching all sessions as “location shoots” to minimize the amount of time spent indoors choosing wardrobe, changing clothes, etc.

3. Restrooms are, of course, available during outdoor sessions at our studio. They are being disinfected before and after each shoot.

4. Hair and makeup service is suspended for the next 30 days to adhere to social distancing guidelines. On set adjustments to hair and makeup are being done by the talent (or, in the case of children, by their parent).

5. As much as possible, wardrobe styling is being done virtually. Rather than picking out wardrobe on set, we're styling via text or email.

6. We’re adhering to the World Health Organization’s guidelines by practicing social distancing during our time together. We’re postponing our usual hugs, handshakes and high fives until later this spring. :)

What Happens Next?

HEADSHOTS:

To minimize the number of people at our studio at one time, our Headshot Days are on hiatus. Instead, we’ll be offering one-on-one headshot sessions throughout the month of April at the Headshot Day rate.

PORTFOLIOS:

As with our April Headshot Day, we’re postponing our April Portfolio Mini-Session (Fun & Fashion) to minimize the number of people at our studio at one time. We'll be scheduling one-on-one portfolio sessions, at a discount, throughout the month of April.
