9 More Favorite Headshots of 2019

2020 is just a few weeks old and we’ve already done 4 headshot sessions in the new year and booked another 10 for our January 19th Headshot Day. To say we are grateful doesn’t even begin to tell the story.

Before we start posting our newest work, we want to share 9 more of our favorite headshots from the year that was 2019.

2-adult_acting_headshot_for_johanna_hart_by_michael_verity_photography.jpg

Johanna Hart (Option Model and Media)

Not only is Johanna stunningly beautiful, she’s also one of the funniest people I’ve ever photographed. She also has an Australian accent, which always earns extra credit!

adult_acting_headshot_for_sierra_hill_by_michael_verity_photography.jpg

Sierra

Sierra was referred to me by one of my acting studio friends. I was completely charmed by her quiet confidence and her absolute lack of any facade.

child_acting_headshot_for_alex_hu_by_michael_verity_photography.jpg

Alex Hugo (Zuri Agency)

If he doesn’t end up a comedy genius before the age of 25, I’ll eat my bowtie.

teen_acting_headshot_for_holden_goyette_by_michael_verity_photography.jpg

Holden Goyette (Puddletown Talent)

I’ve been shooting headshots for Holden for the better part of the last 6 years. It takes about 10 minutes to nail a couple looks because he’s super dialed-in and consummately professional. That’s why he works all the time. :)

child_acting_headshot_for_jimmy_rob_by_michael_verity_photography.jpg

Jimmy (Sports & Lifestyle Unlimited)

It was nice to have Jimmy back in the studio (and on the front porch of our space, which is where we did this shot of the consummate “All American Boy.”)

2-teen_acting_headshot_for_anna_burkhead_by_michael_verity_photography.jpg

Anna (Puddletown)

Anna was a foot shorter and had yet to spend some time with braces when I first shot her a few years ago. Now she’s a top quality athlete, a lover of travel and still a pure joy to work with. Hair and makeup by Karina Talaro.

2-teen_acting_headshot_for_ezra_moody_by_michael_verity_photography.jpg

Ezra Moody (Ryan Artists)

Easily one of the most intelligent, incisive, interesting and dryly humorous kids I’ve ever met. A traveler, a scientist, an observer of life. I love the wisdom he exudes in this image.

child_acting_headshot_for_isaak_crout_by_michael_verity_photography.jpg

Isaak Crout (MAM)

Isaak visits me from Idaho on the regular to have his headshots updated. I find that particularly flattering, considering his Mom is a photographer.

2-adult_acting_headshot_for_alissa_bagan_by_michael_verity_photography.jpg

Allissa Bagan (Sports & Lifestyle Unlimited)

Allissa is the only person to make both our lists of favorite headshots of 2019. This is her smiley side, which is quite endearing. Hair and makeup by Karina Talaro.

Our 9 Favorite Headshots of 2019

It’s been an amazing year.

Along with publishing a half dozen gorgeous editorials, photographing a host of beautiful people at the beach and updating numerous modeling portfolios, we also shot a ton of headshot sessions. In fact, we did headshots for more than 50 Portland actors in the second half of the year alone.

While we don’t play favorites — we love all our clients — we did capture a few headshots that really stand out in our eyes. Here are our 9 Favorite Headshots of 2019, in random order, along a few words on why we like them so much.

steve Marshall voice over actor

Steve Marshall (Ryan Artists)

This handsome young man is a former LA radio programmer and screenwriter who is now a working actor in Portland. He created the world’s first soft rock radio station (KNX-FM) back in the 1970s and was a screenwriter for, among other shows, WKRP In Cincinnati (which automatically makes him one of our heroes).

Leah blue eyes blue shirt beautiful headshot

Leah (Puddletown Talent)

We met Leah just a few months ago when she and her brother, Isaac, and her sister, Naomi, came to the studio for headshots. Leah is an avid dancer and athlete (her Dad is a former pro football player) and, as you can see, a natural beauty. We love how this picture just jumps off the page.

Jonah Kersey actor producer director

John Kersey (Art House)

We’ve known Jonah since he started acting way back in high school. Not only is he a fine actor, he’s an adept screenwriter, producer and director and is quite possibly the most generous person we know. And this is a darn good theatrical headshot.

allissa began actor improv

Alissa Bagan (Sports + Lifestyle Unlimited)

This picture is from our very first shoot with Alissa, who is an actor, model and improvisational comedian. There were so many good images of her from this session, we had trouble choosing our favorite. We like this one because it’s direct and to the point and shows a certain quiet confidence.

Riley blue big eyes

Riley (unsigned)

If we had to pick a favorite of all favorites, it would likely be this picture of Riley. The session, in fact, was pretty much finished. But Riley was so at ease and free spirited — and we were having so much fun — that we kept on shooting. For this one, I simply asked her to stare right through the camera. And there you have it.

moobie actor sports and lifestyle

Mubarak Raoof (Sports + Lifestyle Unlimited)

This shot of Mubarak (or “Moobie,” as his friends call him) was taken sitting on the couch of a coffee shop in SE Portland. I asked him to think about a badass character from a 70s movie and this is the shot we got. The fact that he’s really a super nice, easy going guy makes us like it even more.

sarah assumma headshot

Sarah Assumma (Lovestone Agency, LA)

If you’re a fan of Shameless then you probably recognize this gorgeous girl as the actor who plays Sissy. She’s also a world-class soccer player and one of our first and most cherished champions down in beautiful LA. Any time we can shoot pictures of Sarah, we’re on a plane and ready to go.

Lilian McNeil Zuni

Lilian McNeil (Zuri Model and Talent)

Last, but by no means least, is this beautiful headshot of the amazing Miss Lilian. We get to work with Lilian regularly over the course of the year and every single time it’s a blast. We have to resist the urge to curl those beautiful blonde locks but, no matter what we do, we always get an amazing picture

MALLORIE'S A ROCKSTAR

To say we love Mallorie THIS much is an understatement. She’s beautiful, talented, strong, committed to her craft and one of the nicest people we know. Photographing her is an unequivocal privilege.

TECH STUFF: These pictures were done as part of our world famous Rockstar Sessions. We shot them in my barn with a single light, a Bowens Gemini 400 instrument firing into a 47” umbrella covered with a diffuser. Camera, as usual, was my 5D MKIII with a 70-200mm f2.8. Lightroom for the basics, Photoshop for the specifics with custom color balancing (that is to say: “no filters”). Angie Swim did the wardrobe; Karina Talaro did the hair and makeups styling.

8 GORGEOUS BEACH IMAGES OF MYA JETT

Every time I work with this kid, whether it’s in the studio or at the beach or sitting on a park bench, she always brings something new to the session. She’s creative, she’s intelligent, she’s an amazing athlete and she’s one of my all-time favorite kids to photograph. Here are some awesome pictures we took this summer of Miss Mya Brown.

Model: Mya Brown | Agency: Ryan Artists

Hair and Makeup: Mother Nature | Wardrobe Styling: Claire Verity

Technical Stuff: For the most part, these we taken in bright, high sun with some sort of reflector (white, gold or silver, depending on the circumstances) using my regular kit: Canon 5D MKIII and a 70-200mm f2.8 lens. Post processing was done in Lightroom (for basic Camera RAW settings) and Photoshop (mostly for balancing highlights, shadows and skin tones).

HOW WE DO HEADSHOTS

We’ve had the privilege of shooting Yeshara many times over the years and she never disappoints. Beside being one of the nicest people we’ve ever met, she simply knows how to make the camera work in her favor (and that makes making amazing pictures of her a breeze and a joy). Along with some traditional “eyes-on” headshots, this session gave a couple of beautiful portraits, too. Yeshara is represented by Ryan Artists.

TECH STUFF: The image of Yeshara in the red shirt was shot about two feet inside of the open garage doors of our studio on a somewhat overcast day during the summer with a super shallow depth of field. The images in black were reversed: her back is to the open studio doors and the background is my stylist’s white Toyota 4-Runner. She was lit with 2 white V-flats on either side of her. The rest of the tech is the usual stuff: Canon 5D MKIII with a 70-200, post processed in LR and PS.

4 FABULOUS HEADSHOTS

Despite all the beach and fashion posts you see, headshots are primarily what we do. And here are some recent ones from some new faces on the Portland acting and modeling scene.

Headshots Photography - Portland, OR and Vancouver, WA HS4

TECH STUFF: The three studio shots were done with a 5' Octo and a Gemini 400R, with a white card beneath the talent to reflect a little light back into their eyes. The outdoor shot was done on the edge of open shade on a very sunny day. Canon 5D MKIII, 70-200mm f2.8, as usual. Lightroom and Photoshop for post.

SINGER, DANCER, ACTOR: MISS MYA V.

What we knew about Miss Mya as we put together outfits for a day at the beach is she's super-fun to work with and one of the sweetest kids on the planet. And we knew we'd get some great looks from her.

What we didn't know is she is an amazing voice-over artist. She can imitate everyone from Applejack from My Little Pony to the Queen of England. Oh, yeah, and she can sing, too! Miss Mya V. is awesome!

MYA - Portland, OR and Vancouver, WA Tween Model Photography MVK5

TECH STUFF: It was a pretty cloudy day -- as you can tell from the gray ocean in the last image -- so we shot everything at around 6500K with a Canon 5D MKIII and a 70-200mm f2.8 and a bit of reflector action here and there. Her skin is pretty flawless so most of the retouching, beyond the basics in Lightroom, was balancing highlights and shadows. I used a gradient mapping technique I learned from Pratik Naik, which is a pretty effective way to manage skin tones, along with the usual frequency separation things I've been doing for awhile.

BEACH BLONDIE

Lilian is one of those kids who can wear any outfit -- from a fancy dress to beach wear to jeans and a leather jacket -- and look awesome no matter what. This set of images were taken at the beach, in Seaside, OR, about a month ago. We figure they pretty much speak for themselves!

TECH STUFF: Everything here was shot with my usual kit: Canon 5D MKIII and 70-200mm f2.8. We used a silver reflector here and there to light up her eyes (see image #3). The weather had "Mixed Emotions" (reference: a Rolling Stones song) as the clouds came and went, which made lighting a bit of a challenge at times. I used Lightroom for basic adjustments (camera calibration, sharpening, highlight/shadow, white balance) and finished the images in Photoshop.

JACK & PENNY

It took us awhile to get these world travelers into our studio but, when we did, the results were just spectacular. We made these amazing images during one of our Rockstar Sessions, which if you haven't heard, have become a really popular event for us.

If you're a Rockstar and would like to join for a session, you can get more information and contact us here. And, if you're a casting director who'd like to work with one of these kids, hit up Marissa at Sport + Lifestyle Unlimited.

TECH STUFF: These were shot in my studio, in front of a Silverlake backdrop, using a Gemini 400 head and a 47" deep umbrella. Canon 5DMKIII and a 70-200mm f2.8 at something like ISO 100, f9 at 1/160. Beautiful kids courtesy of their Mom and Dad; wardrobe styling by Angie Swim.

AVERIE

Today we got to deliver a pair of headshots for an up-and-coming Portland actor who we know has huge successes in her future. She's smart, she's hard-working and she looks (and sounds) about three years younger than her age (which is ALWAYS a good thing for an actor). We can't wait to see what the future holds!

Tech Stuff: A 5D MKIII, a 70-200 f2.8 and a Gemini 400R with a 5' Octo (my standard commercial headshot kit). A little color correction and sharpening in Lr and some color and shadow balancing in Ps and, voila, a fabulous headshot.

AWESOME OLIVIA IS PRETTY IN PINK

She was a little shy at first but, by the time we got to the end of her shoot, she was working the set like a pro. We love working with new kids ... and Miss Olivia was a treat to meet. We can't wait to work with her again.

Tech Stuff: Shot with a Canon 5D MKIII and a 70-200mm 2.8 at roughly 1/160, f8 and ISO 100 using a Bowens 400R instrument and a 5' Octo. Lightroom for basic exposure and color correction, Photoshop for the detail work. Cuteness was entirely from her Mom and Dad!

DEVYN THE BLUE EYED BEACH BABY

To say we appreciate this kid and her amazing Mom is an understatement.

Every time we get to work with Devyn, it's nothing less than a privilege and an honor. To every shoot she brings professionalism beyond her years and a willingness to have fun doing the work (something we adults need to always remember). And, in case you've not noticed, she's SOOOOO CUTE!

Technical Stuff: Shot with a Canon 5D MKIII and a 70-200mm f2.8 on a pretty sunny Friday afternoon at the beach in Seaside, OR. For the most part they were shot between f8 and f10 at ISO 200 and 6300K. The swimwear images were taken in bright sun, metered on her face; the rest of the shots were taken in open shade using some soft white reflection. These are pretty close to what came out of the camera save for some basic highlight/shadow adjustments in Lightroom and some skin tonality retouching done with Photoshop.

RONAN

For those who were wondering, we shoot boys at the beach, too!

This guy is a true sweetheart, a real pleasure to work with. We've never taken a bad headshot of him, we totally dig the shots of him in the dunes and the black and white image at the end of the set is one of our favorites of the year (hint to Columbia Sportswear).

Casting directors and creatives interested in working with Ronan should hit up Jennifer at Ryan Artists in Portland.

Tech Stuff: These were shot on a cloudy morning in Seaside, OR using a Canon 5D MKIII, a 70-200 and a few reflectors. The headshot was actually done in our hotel room, while it was raining, with Ronan facing a sliding glass door. The black and whites are pretty straight forward: a little exposure and highlight adjustment and converted to B&W in Lightroom. The horizontal image has a little more magic involved, including the removal of a swingset camera left and the enhancement of the sky using a blue soft light overlay and a bit of masking and painting.

CHLOE IN THE SUN

If I could pick one kid to photograph all the time -- other than my own beautiful daughter -- it would be this awesome kiddo. She's as nice as can be, as professional as anyone can ask and, yeah, she's beautiful in such a natural way. Except a little color correction and removing a stray beachcomber in the background, these pictures fell pretty much directly from the camera. (We photographers love that!)

If you are a casting or creative director and would like to work with her, please ring the bell of Christian or Marissa at Sports + Lifestyle Unlimited.

Hair and makeup done her mom, the amazing Karina Talaro, who also does MUAH for all my editorial sessions. Wardrobe styled by Claire Verity.

Technical Stuff: All these shots were done on the beach in Seaside, OR, on a really sunny day using a Canon 5D MKIII, a 70-200mm f2.8 lens and a lot of reflectors. The next to last image (of her splashing in the water) has some color enhancement done to the water but otherwise these  images are pretty much straight from the camera except for a little color correction.

MARVELOUS MR. EZRA

Some kids just make an impression, even before they step in front of the camera. Such was the case with Ezra, whose charm and personality was evident the minute he stepped out of the car and shook my hand.

And though many of the kids with whom we work are smart and creative, Ezra is particularly sharp and incisive (witnessed by the way he explains to me what science of light meters).

If you're an agency or creative director looking for a handsome and friendly kid for your next commercial session, give the folks at Ryan Artists a shout and ask them about Ezra.

Tech Stuff: These images were shot at my studio, out in the country, just north of Portland, OR using my go-to kit: a Canon 5D MKIII and a 70-200mm f2.8. The studio images were lit with a single 5' Octabox using Bowens Gemini 400s at around 4. Camera setting was somewhere around 1/160 at f8 at ISO 100. I used some frequency separation in Photoshop to balance highlights and shadows.

ELIZABETH IS FUN & FASHIONABLE

We think this kiddo is just adorable! The blonde streaks in her hair, her sweet smile and eyes that just knock us out. As with so many of our awesome clients, Elizabeth was referred to us by a friend and we were so appreciative to meet her at our Winter Fun & Fashion session. Thank you, Elizabeth, for making great pictures!

OUTSTANDING MISS OPAL

Some kids just have charisma and this girl, who worked with us for the first time at our March Fun & Fashion event, has enough charm and personality for 10 people. She's a dancer and an actor and, most important, an awesome young lady. We just love the range of personality we see in these pictures. Thanks, Opal, for working with us!
